Welcome to the Mudgee Local Area Command site. The command encompasses the council areas of Mid-Western and Warrumbungles, and covers over 24,000 square kilometres. The command is based at Mudgee with 9 other sector stations.
The Mid-Western Regional Council is located 3.5 hours from Sydney and includes the historic towns of Gulgong, Kandos, Mudgee and Rylstone, in addition to many rural villages. The Warrumbungle Shire is positioned on the Newell Highway mid-way between Brisbane and Melbourne. The towns and villages of this shire comprise Coonabarabran, Baradine, Binnaway, Coolah, Dunedoo and Mendooran.
There is a growing mining industry in the southern parts of the command. This combined with tourism, wineries and agriculture provides employment for a prosperous area.
The command is home to many attractions such as Burrendong and Windamere Dams; The Warrumbungle, Wollembi, Goulburn and Coolah Tops National Parks; and Siding Springs Observatory. A number of significant events are held that attract large crowds to the area such as Mudgee Small Farm Field Days, Kandos Street Machine Show and A Day On The Green.
The Mudgee Local Area Command is situated on the Central Tablelands of New South Wales. The command covers a geographical area of over 24,000 sq klms and encompasses two (2) local government areas. The Mudgee area continues to show significant growth, in business / industrial developments and population growth. This is underpinned by the ever growing tourist and mining industries.
The command has 10 policing sectors that service a range of communities from isolated rural properties, villages and small towns, to the two larger centres of Mudgee and Coonabarabran. There are four major highways traversing the command, those being the Newell Hwy, Oxley Hwy, Golden Hwy and the Castlereagh Hwy. The Newell Hwy is a major heavy vehicle transport route.
A majority of the crime in this command is committed within the two larger centres. The main driver for crime continues to be illicit drugs and alcohol, however the down turn in the rural economy, low employment opportunities and a lower level of education in some sections of the community also contribute. Another issue identified is the poor security practices that create greater opportunities for offenders.
Offenders who reside within the command generally commit the majority of crime in this command. There is minimal influence from neighbouring commands, however there are isolated incidents where offenders travel to this command and committed multiple offences and then leave shortly after, normally stealing a motor vehicle to travel here and stealing another to leave. The lack of public transport into and out of the command is a significant factor in these issues.
